there are always reviews that predict the future aspects of photocatalysis. Photocatalysis still need to be worked for more strength and efficiency in visible light. Do you have a different idea? what's the different angle you believe in?
To increase the efficiency one has to look for new materials. Everyone is asking for out of the box material or combination of materials which can increase the quantum efficiency. I am also looking for new idea new materials other than oxides.
Future of photocatalysis are producing more efficient catalyst that work under visible range, production of robust thin film and more applications for energy production such as solar or hydrogen production through water splitting.
Thanks for the interst and views. Both are prospective but the required catalyst may be different. I would like to have the views of all the researchers regarding the future of photocatalysis. Is it having broad interest or only confind to certain application only. Please give your views the prospective of this field in the comming days.
I think it still has a broad interest. because of the limited natural resources. It has its way for degradation of water wastes, water spliting and so on. and I guess the nano particles are not still a good choice due to a secondary work that should be done on the water for removing them.
It is good to have different applications. However I donot have much idea regarding the cancer treatment through photocatalysis. Can you say somthings.
Hopefully, photocatalysis will be having bgirght future in coming years, but more focus need to put on development of solar light activated photocatalyst with higher surface area. So that it can be useful for the conversion of solar light in to energy. Presenlty more attention is given on water splitting but still it is in premature stage, some one need to come out of the regular synthesis of catalyst and need to start focus on this problem right from the bottom and hope it may come soon.
Recently UVLED has attracted the scientific community for their use in photocatalytic application. These LED operation can be done with solar panel also as they need less power around 3.0eV and soon some water purification system will come in the market based on this.
However, to make photocatalysis future technology, effort need to focused on energy efficient sources, effective photocatalyst design is must.
Now synthetic chemists are more interested to develop environmentally benign approaches (from the point of view of Global Worming). In this context, it is the most promising research area.
According to an editorial in Business Week, “Reducing carbon dioxide is no longer just a ‘green thing’. It makes business and foreign policy sense, as well…In the end only real solution may be new energy technologies”.
I hope photocatalysis will become a cheaper cleaning technology in the near future for the removal of organic as well as inorganic pollutants from water, air and soil.
Photocatalysis is also used in cancer treatment. However, its potential is not fully investigated yet.
For more details please go through the following books/journals
1) Application of Titanium Dioxide Photocatalysis to Construction Materials
2) K. Hashimoto, H. Irie, A. Fujishima, TiO2 Photocatalysis: A Historical Overview
and Future Prospects, Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. 44 (2005) 8269–8285.
Of course. Recently some report are available on the material development with a view to utilize total solar spectrum. Hope this will increase the interst again.
Photo catalysis is also used for the reduction of carbon dioxide to useful commercial products such as methane, methanol and ethanol with simultaneous production of clean fuel hydrogen. Thus these research works are trying to IMITATE Mother Nature work of photosynthesis. However, So far the best catalyst is TiO2. Even though various methods were used to enhance the activity of this catalyst, the amount of CO2 reduced during the experiments still less than the amount of CO2 generated in the power station to produce the UV light used in the experiment. When you look at the literature of the photo-catalytic reduction of CO2 with simultaneous production of clean fuel hydrogen, you realize that so almost 95% of the research work concentrated on enhancing the flow of electrons. I mean kinetic factors.
Yes, that is true but the still the rate of production of fuel is very low and need to be increased and this challenge may change the future of photocatalysis...
i think in future the technology will convert into green technology, because researcher focus on the sustainable materials due to the depletion of fossil resources and increase health hazard.
hydrogen production is a promising technique for the production of fuel and generate electricity as a fuel
