Catalase is an enzyme used by aerobic and most facultative anaerobe bacteria to split the toxic H2O2 into water and O2. Surprisingly, Bacteroides fragilis is a strict anaerobic bacteria. It's energy metabolism is mostly fermentative. Under certain growth conditions a rudimentary electron transport chain is functioning with fumarate or hydrogen as the final electron acceptors.

What is the function of catalase in this bacterium?
