There is no one factor to define an ecosystem. In fact, an ecosystem is considered quite an abstract concept. It ranges in scale, e.g., the leaf on a tree to the entire planet. When thinking of ecosystems consider the following:
- 2 components: abiotic and biotic.
- Ecosystems are real but also abstract.
- Energy relationships underlie ecosystem processes.
- Nutrients are cycled.
- Ecosystem occur in space and exist in time.
- Ecosystems are interrelated.
- Ecosystems are open.
- Ecosystem are self-regulating.
Over time, the ecosystem reaches a state called CLIMAX (optimal state given the conditions of the environment)
