What is the experience of others with regard to conservative management of NPH. Should acetazolamide be administered and for how long?
I have been observing that though acetazolamide brings good relief to patients, those who chose to continue it for a longer time were noted to have poor outcome from diversion procedure.
Regarding acetazolamide, it was prescribed for me after my relapse and I found it ineffective. I used it for more than 2 months and stopped it as I found my eyeballs felt soft. I suggest to ask also ophthalmologists about its use in non glaucomatous persons. I have a story also with prednisolone but it is not the time now to talk about it. Its potenial toxicity is well known. I strongly believe at the timebeing that shunt is the correct answer in hydrocephalus patients.
I will add that shunting should be of course effective (well adjusted) and safe. The balance between these two is the challenge to neurosurgeons
