I have some confusion about the exact definition of ecotype and chemotype, is it correct to say: If an aromatic plant continues to produce the main constituents of the essential oil in different habitat it will be defined as chemotype "because the biosynthesis has a chemical stability", while if the aromatic plant changes its main constituents of the essential oil depending on the environmental conditions it will be considered as ecotype: "very susceptible to the environmental conditions" ?

Hello. In my opinion, these terms may link partially. For example, plants of a particular chemotype (eg. chamomille type B) are distributed across different countries, and due to different environmental factors (soil properties, precipitation, temperature etc.) can form various ecotypes of differentiated phenotypic features.

I agree totally with the definitions of Padalia and Manika: An ecotype is a subset of a species that has adapted to a specific geographical location and as a result has developed distinct features from other members of the sames species while chemotypes are plants of the same species distinct from each other by their chemical components.

As the name indicate Ecotype refere to species existing in a particular set of similar conditions within the ecosystem/enviromentl sets around the plant helping it to adopt to that condition. Further, our reserach on various aromatic plants also revaled that Chemotype may also exist within ecotypes (populations) means in a particular area the same plant may have different chemical constitution or may be smae (as xpected) but there might be some physiological differences/ distinct features which they have developed to survive or succeed in particular environmental conditions.
Chemotype seems more specific term to describe high cohhessive individuals together based on their chemical compounds.

While agreeing with Dr. Padalia concerning the descriptions of ecotypes and chemotypes, I would like to add that not only chemotypes (genotypes differing in chemical profiles) but also morphotypes (genotypes differing in morphology) and genotypes (plants differing in their genetic make up) can occur within ecotypes.
There is another term which is often used, the phenotype. A phenotype is generally defined as genotye + environment. That is the same genotype grown in different agroclimatic environments behaves differently, hence termed as a phenotype. An ecotype is an indigenous plant and phenotypes are generally introduced or plants under investigation.
