What is the differences in using Spectral element and FInite volume grid in the ACGM?

I would like if any of you can explain me the differences in using a Finite Volume and Spectral Element in AGCM, specially in CESM NCAR Model... Moreover, I will appreciate it if any of you have some experience running both grids and comment your results.

P.D. I am focusing my studies in tropic regions, and the SE require less computing capacity.
