I am reading a paper which says: "the initial energy or the initial entropy

density are assumed to scale with either the number

of participants nucleons (“soft” or “non-perturbative”

particle production) or the number of binary nucleon-nucleon

collisions (“hard” or “perturbative” particle production)."

I know that in a heavy-ion collision we have the spectator and participants. I don't understand the difference between participants and binary collisions...

What is the definition of "number of participants" and "Number of binary collisions"?

Thank you very much in advance!
