Though both the methods look similar I believe there may be differences in them. What are the disadvantages of cut-cell meshing method and why is not widely used in research in comparison with Hex Dominant meshing method. My prime focus is external flow dynamics, though a general perspective also is appreciated.
In my understanding the difference is in the treatment of curved wall boundaries.
In cut-cell meshing, there are only hexahedral cells. They can get smaller towards the wall, thereby approximating to a certain extend a curved wall. But for the wall treatment something like immersed boundary methods are required.
With Hex-dominant meshing method, there are other mesh element types present. Those can be used to "fill the gap" between the last near-wall hex element and the geometrical approximation of a curved wall. At the outermost surfaces of those mesh elements a regular boundary treatment can applied and the vertices of those mesh elements can be placed directly at the exact wall position (projection).
