Hard work is the work in which a person/s put a lot of efforts and the reward is proportionate to efforts or less than efforts. In a smart work always rewards are more than proportionate efforts. Hard work need lot of time, energy and resources. Smart work require optimum time, energy and resources.
Hard work can be done by sincere and honest people but smart work can be performed by the sincere and intelligent people.

Smart work is smart S= Specific, M= Measurable, A= Achievable, R=Reality, T= time limited,

I'd consider hard work to bear challenges regarding the effort to do it - be it the amount of work to do, general difficulties to do "the job" and alike. Thus hard work would be executing some task that requires considerably more efforts than the average task.
In contrast, I consider smart work to have achieved a result that's beyond average regarding the amount of work invested to achieve the result.
Thus smart work can be hard work (as some stated).
