In the paper published on Science, A. Lindsay Greer gave some examples of materials with glassy or amorphous states. However, I don't find the definitions to distingguish these two phrases. What is the difference between glassy and amorphous, especilliy in the field of metallic glasses? Thank you very much!

Glassy and amorphous substance, in physics specified like one amorphous and they are both liquid. They are definitely liquid via internal structure, but with high viscosity then ordinary liquid. But the main difference between solid and liquid is crystal cell structure. In short words, glassy systems feature the phenomenon of glass transition: transition from supercooled liquid --> amorphous solid (glass); however, all amorphous systems do not necessarily arise from such phenomenon. Consequently, all amorphous materials are not necessarily glasses.

The glassy material is obtained by continuous cooling while the amorphous material is achieved by other methods aside continuous cooling. for instance, planetary ball milling (mechanical energy milling) can produce amorphous structure but not glassy structure. Thus, the major difference is the method of achieving them.

Amorphous state means non-crystalline. By definition liquids and gases are amorphous so the term would not be applied to them. Solids that are amorphous can include, I believe, non-glassy substances - I believe, without being sure, that sulfur, which is opaque yellow, is amorphous when solidified from molten. I consider glassy to include brittle and more or less transparent.

The diffrences are in the definition of Mr Azizi. One of the ways of determining the glassy to amorphous transformation is the use of Dynamic mechanical behavior. The changes in Modulus and loss angle values show charecteristic changes at the glassy transition temperature.

They are both glass and amorphous formed when a liquid is supercooled rapidly, and they both have irregular structures. While a glass is generally considered to be a supercooled, configurationally frozen liquid, not all amorphous solids are glasses. For example, amorphous silicon is a four-fold coordinated semiconducting solid, much like crystal silicon. Liquid silicon is 8-12 fold coordinated with metallic bonding. Amorphous silicon has been shown to display a first-order phase transition to both the crystal and the liquid.
I think from the above explanation, all glasses are amorphous solids, but not all amorphous solids are glasses.
