Data is Latin, uniquely woven into English. In Latin, it's a plural, but in English, it can be made a singular, as in "this data" referring to a singular point, or "these data" referring to entire data group. In any case a data is a fact. Datum on the other hand, is the actually *proper* plural of "data."
