I haven't run a daily diary/experience sampling/"beeper" study since 2007 and back then we were using ESP on Palm Pilots. I'm sure things have changed and I've seen some trends in ethnographic apps for iPhone, etc. I'm curious how people are doing this now: what are the best in show apps, platforms (Android/iOS), time syncing strategies if running a study across platforms, cloud-based solutions for data dumps that folks are using. Any links, refs. to extant, recent reviews would be much appreciated. -Thanks

People are still using a lot of stuff right now, including smartphone apps, PDA's, electronic recording devices (EAR), and beeper/paper/pencil, according to the literature.
However, there does appear to be a move toward smartphone apps - and they have a lot of potential. (See Miller 2012.) (Personally, see Runyan & Steinke 2015, Runyan et al. 2013.) I'd definitely recommend PSYT, http://www.psyt.co.uk/research, as they do much more than just the others listed above that all seem fairly limited and as they are leading academics in their fields having developed this technology themselves, are really knowledgable and helpful with guiding through how to develop the best build your own real-time data gathering solution
