An attractive research activity on renewable energy in recent years, have been on producing fuel (hydrogen, etc) from saline Ocean waters. Have this been successful yet? Which institutes are working on this subject? and what is the current advances in the subject?

You may want to read my published papers on use of forward osmosis (FO) for water desalination. in this regard, the osmotic pressure is used to drive turbines to generate electricity which can then be directed to water electrolyzers to produce hydrogen gas. The energy required for the osmotic device can be obtained by integrating solar power concentrators into the system.
As described above, the integrated system can produce drinking water, electricity, and hydrogen using FO integrated with solar concentrators.
Japan and Norway are examples of leading countries in utilizing the forward osmosis technology for water desalination and electricity production (a few MW).
