You can make the land use and structural maps from satellite images for check dam selection. However there is lot of publication on site selection water management from satellite data.

Dear Ali: If I understood your question you can use high resolution satellite images such as WV2 to locate the dam axis as well as the spillway, which are very difficult to miss in high resolution satellite images. In low resolution images you may look for the dam lake at the upstream of the expected dam and this is by comparing images at different dates. I do appreciate more elaboration on what your are looking for. Hopefully this answer may shed some light on your question.
