A total of 55 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with a newly discovered virus were reported to WHO by nine countries between September 2012 and 7 June 2013.
The virus is distantly related to the virus that caused severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and was recently named Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) by the Coronavirus Study Group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The first documented MERS-CoV cases occurred in Jordan in early 2012.
Since then, the overall number of cases has been low, but the virus has caused 31 deaths (about 60% of patients) and many of them in people who had one or more major chronic conditions.
Forty of the 55 cases to date occurred in Saudi Arabia. The rest were reported from other countries in the Middle East (Qatar and the United Arab Emirates), from Tunisia in North Africa, and from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Europe.
There appear to be three main epidemiological patterns: first, sporadic cases that occur in communities, the sources of which are unknown; second, clusters of infections in families where there appears to have been person-to-person transmission; and third, clusters of infections in health-care facilities.
There is no evidence of widespread person-to-person transmission of MERS-CoV. Where it has been suspected that the virus has been transmitted from person to person, it appears that there had been close contact between somebody who was sick and another person, such as a family member, a fellow patient or a health-care worker.
WHO is urging its Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and to carefully review any unusual patterns. http://www.emro.who.int/press-releases/2013/corona-virus-who-saudi-arabia-mission.html
Human to human spread through coughing, sneezing, or touching an infected person.
How dangerous is coronavirus?
It causes severe illness in around a quarter of cases, and can be deadly.
What are the symptoms of the coronavirus?
The new coronavirus appears to cause symptoms like fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and other respiratory symptoms.
How is coronavirus diagnosed?
In general, these lab tests fall into two categories:
Molecular tests, which look for evidence of active infection; and
Serology tests, which look for previous infection by detecting antibodies to MERS-CoV. Serology tests are for surveillance or investigational purposes and not for diagnostic purposes.
Transmission. MERS-CoV, like other coronaviruses, likely spreads from an infected person's respiratory secretions, such as through coughing. ... Infected people have spread MERS-CoV to others in healthcare settings, such as hospitals.
Novel corona virus outbreak recently took place in wuhan , hubei province , china . Its being declared as pandemic across several countries like japan ,USA , PAKISTAN, INDIA etc .
Modes of transmission is still unknown ,
Less severe than SARS OR BIRD FLU but as we are not able to fins out the modes of transmission so its a hectic pandemic to tackle.
No definitive treatment so far ,
Signs and sypmtlms as like pneumonia , and later stages also with diarrohea and vomiting.
Precautions : avoid contact with population at high risk or infected population , wear tight mask covering mouth and nose , wear glasses , avoid direct contact with with body fluids with other infected population .
Prospective : German scientist got success to extract some strains of corona virus and developed a vaccine but trials of this vaccine are at initial phase . May be it needs some more time .
Dear Dr. Panigrahi! I am a researcher of supply chain mgt. This is a novel type of virus and it is very important to gather recent publications to refer to: Some important questions you raised are still under investigation. I did my best to search for the most up-to-date resources:
1) NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "Novel Coronavirus that recently emerged in China: Research underway to address latest viral threat." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 23 January 2020.
2) European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Rapid Risk Assessment: Outbreak of acute respiratory syndrome associated with a novel coronavirus, Wuhan, China; second update – 26 January 2020. ECDC:Stockholm; 2020. In china Its emergency declared. The response is precautionary and responsive one. Coronavirus family has aleady Marked Its impact in form of outbreak of disease in 2002 and 2012. This time Its from same family of viruses but symptoms and Its effect depends on immune system. In simple Its undergoing investigation Whether it can be completely Linked with seafood or environment upto date No antibiotic is present to combat this virus. What is more cases are very few but reported sporadically in different countries too.
Thanks for your kind reply sir. I need to know the status of the disease in Thailand and Malaysia. Because within a week I am visiting these countries for some casual works. Is it advisable to visit Thailand and Malaysia?
The virus has been shown to have human to human transmission. The most common presenting signs and symptoms are fever, cough, dyspnea, and myalgia. You may find the latest number of confirmed cases and total deaths here:
Coronaviruses are types of viruses that typically affect the respiratory tract of mammals, including humans. They are associated with the common cold, pneumonia, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and can also affect the gut.
A coronavirus was first isolated in 1937 from an infectious bronchitis virus in birds that has the ability to seriously devastate poultry stocks.
These viruses are responsible for between 15 and 30 percent of common colds.
Over the last 70 years, scientists have found that coronaviruses can infect mice, rats, dogs, cats, turkeys, horses, pigs, and cattle. Most recently, authorities identified a coronavirus outbreak in China that has now reached other countries.
Wearing a face mask when contacting with other peaple, using a paper towel or cloth to cover face and mouth while sneezing, washing our hands carefully with soap and water after sneezing or coughing and befor eating and avoiding the direct contacting with patients.
Yehya A. Salih Great info. , But doctor is this virus can be transmitted by mail packages sent by airplanes. Recently I received mail packages sent me from different spots in china, Almost it takes about three weeks to arrived, now I'm really scared to open it. the packages contain electronic devices. You advise Please?
Really, I dont know if these packages had been exposed to sneeze droplets of infected persons or no. The virus can stays in an active case for few days out of the body, therefore, you must be very careful when you are dealing with any thing comes from infectious places.
Yehya A. Salih Many thanks for you Doctor, I never opened these packages and using gloves and Muzzle when I handle it, I keep it in my car box after applied ethanol (in 96% concentration) for it and my car box. the main idea is to keep it for a long time with high temperatures ( above 30c ) after one month may I open it.
Well done dear Dr. Mohammed, you are right. Its very good procedure. However, high temperature can strongly kills the virus within few days. Also, you must avoid touching your face before washing your hands with soap and water or any sterilization solution.
So far very little is known about coronavirus transmission. However, being a betacoronavirus of dimensions greater than those of H1N1, it is suspected that the transmission routes will be the same: Droplet, contact and by aerosols in certain clinical procedures, such as endo tracheal intubation, bronchoscopy, and aerosol administration with expanding chamber.
Thus, it is recommended to use basic precautions to control infection such as, for example, surgical mask on suspects and health professionals. Use of PP2 mask in case of procedures that release aerosols, and use of gown and gloves in case of direct contact with biological products( feces, urine excretions and secretions) of an infected or suspected patient.
I also warn about the importance of hand hygiene often.
The CDC and WHO, have several documentation on these issues.
The death toll from a new corona virus epidemic in mainland China surged past 1,500 on Saturday, as France reported the first death outside of the Asia-Pacific region.
The death by virus corona has increased up to 1770 cases and the confirmed cases reached 70548 today. So, Taiwan reported the first death case besides France.
The death by novel coronavirus has reached 2000 cases and the confirmed cases reached about 74000 This day. Hong Kong has recorded the second death case today.
Yehya A. Salih The corona virus is spreading in the Middle East, Europe and other parts of the world, as Brazil confirmed its first case in Latin America.
Cases worldwide: 81,000 (mainland China 78,000)
Deaths worldwide: nearly 2,800 (mainland China 2,715 deaths)
Countries and territories with confirmed cases: at least 44
Daily number of infections worldwide higher than in China
Corona virus is spreading in the Middle East, Europe and other parts of the world. So Brazil recorded the first case today, the affected countries reached about 40.
The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days then how can one know if he/ she is infected ?
Latest information is that the incubation period may be upto 28 days before the symptoms of COVID 19 are evident.
By the time a person has fever and/or cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs are usually 50 % Fibrosis and it's too late !
Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning ;
Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds.
If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness , etc , it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection.
In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air!
SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases. Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY.
Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least.
WHY ?
Even if the virus does enter into your mouth...drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your oesophagus and into the stomach.
Once there , your stomach ACID’s will kill all the virus.
If you don't drink enough water more regularly...the virus can enter your windpipes and into the LUNGS.
That's very dangerous.
Take care everyone & may the world recovers from corona virus soon.
Two news cases of corona virus have been reported in India, one in New Delhi and another in Telangana. This takes the total corona virus cases in India to five, weeks after the first case was reported in Kerala.
Corona virus is a respiratory disease caused by virus. Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. Some people recover easily this disorders others may get very sick very quickly. There is evidence that it spreads from person to person. Good hygiene can be prevent infection, and Israeli scientists are developing the first vaccine against Corona virus.
Corona virus is showing how meaningless and petty our differences of religions and left/right ideologies are, What took years to build on stock market was wiped off in days by a creature in the size of nanometer.
The greatest manufacturer society which took four decades to take over the world in products, is left with desolate factories. The greatest army of the world which won two world wars and gallantry brotherhood is scared to death that a soldier of theirs is carrying this special flu, if corona virus doesn't unite us nothing can.
Coronavirus in humans is one of the viruses that infect the respiratory system with major problems and may lead to acute pneumonia as it transmits by touching contaminated areas such as smooth surfaces and the most important symptoms of coronavirus are the dryness of competitive ducts and a sharp rise in degrees of heat and cold ...
Yes, the hot weather prevents the infection by this virus, because it can not tolerate the high temperature. So India is away from infection, although it recorded 30 confirmed infections by Covid-19..
