In an experiment concerning fine root decomposition by litter bag method, I collected the residual of fine roots in the bags for a year, and determined the C, N, P, Al, Mg, Ca, content of them in lab, also soil temperature and moisture were recorded.
I agree the decomposition rate will affected by characteristic of fine roots, and it seems that discussion on how the environmental factor contributes to the decomposition is rare, does anyone know more about this? Thanks for your ideas.

this is a very interesting topic, and I'd be quite intrigued to see what you have found. Clearly, the fine root biomass represents a pool of highly favourable, potentially labile CNP, but also (and species/PFT dependent), with some secondary or protective compounds. I would suspect that the microbial biomass structure, and the expression of key enzymes wouldbe the major factors in all, but from an environmental (edpahics?) perspective, the availability of moisture and temperature range would be the overarching variables. pH will also control enzyme activity and material diffusion, as well as species organisation. I would suspect that lastly, the availability of certain elements (e.g. Mn) which act as enzyme cofactors would be important. I hope you find some interesting things!

As I know, studies in terms of root decomposition are common in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Environmental conditions are definitely important factors influencing root decomposition. I support your recordings of soil temperature and moisture concurrently during the experiment. Other factors may also be considered such as Eh. And if it concerns marine ecosystems, hydrological conditions may also be involved.
