Dear Colleagues,
We synthesised YBCO and formed a pellet.
I have one seen one purchased YBCO pellet which is black.
But, our prepared YBCO colour is gray.
Can you please tell me the colour of YBCO high Tc superconducting material?
We are confused whether our synthesis is correct or not, before doing XRD Or any other studies.

YBCO should be black in colour if it is stoichiometric. You may have top surface problem. XRD will explain it to you. You can also consider to remove top surface using a high grade sandpaper to see if it is black below. If not then stoichiometry is off and may not be superconducting.

if I remember right, it is black. But colour effect depends on the angle of light incidence. The reflectivity increases if the angle is flat (the sample is not absolutely black).
I would recommend to test the superconductivity by an easy experiment. Put a permanent magnet into liquid nitrogen. Then take the sample, cool it down and put it on the magnet. The sample must be deflected and hovers over the magnet. If this can be observed, the sample is suitable for other experiments. Otherwise you can forget it.
