As a means of risk assessment in home or work places, a measurement of dust concentration could give a lot for public health concern, therefore quantifying these contaminants become an easy way to determine environmental safety. I want to know the easiest and cost effective way to determine this.
For the measurement of air contaminants, air monitoring system is usually used. This is consist with glass impingers, manometers, motor,pump etc.Air is sucked and pass through absorbing solutions. For different contaminants, varieties of solutions are used.Thus gases in air is stored in absorbing liquids. Concentration of gases easily measured by colorimetric technique. Suspended particulate material (SPM ) measured by passing air through different varieties of cellulose membrane at a particular flow rate with adjusted and known filtration efficiency. Collected SPM have been passed through different sizes of mesh and further use to classify the size, type and quantity. For detailed study kindly refer :

Otitoju .... First of all, the sampling of air borne particle can be bone simply by your vacuum cleaner being collected. These collected dust, fibers, hair, etc.. may then be brought to a lab to perform simple tests first and rather separation of the dust components by solubility prior to the detailed chemical analysis. However, biological analysis should also be performed because some bacterial or viruses may also be loaded by dust particle... Good luck.
