I have read some articles about KPI's and found out KPIOnto. It is connected with KPI ontology. Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, becoming, existence or reality as well as the basic categories of being and their relations. Do we need programming language for philosophical study? What is the big idea about KPIOnto? What is its practical use?
From your question it seems like the main thrust is towards ontology within information systems per se. The first link is a ResearchGate paper which reviews the use of ontology in cloud computing. It includes references to seminal papers on the general use of ontology. If your interest is in the general application of ontology I recommend starting by looking at some of its references: [1] [2] and [12].
It also references two pieces of my work also linked here. These are interested in KPIs for risk, vulnerability and security so systems can be dynamically governed in light of changing: federation/collaboration environments, vulnerability, business needs and risk appetites.

My view on Diamantini, Potena & Storti's work is while the examples from them I have seen are not from the computing domain (training costs/hourly rates etc of staff) they KPIOnto is designed for machine inference and use in software tools (albeit over a very general business governance landscape).

The KPIOnto - ontology serves as a schema to represent KPIs as a knowledge graph. The format is RDF a W3C standard coming from the Semantic Web, it helps when you want to link and integrate different data sources with the KPIs and run some graph analytics on top. We have used it already in some projects.
