We are trying to quantify the Al content by XPS in the surface of some Mg-Al alloys. In our measurements we observe strong overlap between the second bulk plasmon of the Mg 2p XPS peak and the Al2p XPS peak, but also between the plasmon of the Mg2s peak and the Al2s peak.

Thank you for your very interesting and helpful answer.
Attached you may find, the Mg2p, Al2p and Al2s high resolutionXPS peaks obtained in the non-sputtered surface of a pure Magnesium commercial specimen (100% Mg) compared with those obtained in the AZ31 alloy (97% Mg-3% Al) and the AZ61 alloy (94% Mg-6% Al) and their evolution after 5 and 10 minutes of sputtering.
