I am beginning a qualitative research project and unfortunately I will not be able to conduct face-to-face interviews with all the participants so will need to do some by phone. Any advice from others who have done this would be very much appreciated.

I used an app called ACR, which I found very good in many aspect. Excellent sound quality, easy to turn on and off, easy handling of voice files (you can just email them directly from your mobile phone to your computer so that you can open them in transcription software. It's a free app. There are probably others just as good, but this is the one I have experience from. You might also want to consider Skype, which I would consider one step better as you will get better visuals and face-to-face contact of sort. Today there are recorders that can connect to the phone, recording audio with great quality, some are well priced and a good qualitative researcher should have one!

I agree with Susanne that are any number of good apps for directly recording calls on smart phones, several which are free.
Hi Aoife. If you are using skype then you can directly record the conversation on your computer. If you have to use the old fashioned technnique of holding a recorder up to the telephone receiver, then don't use a mobile as this will create feeback rendering the conversation inaudible.
