Working on Zn-Al-Ni solder alloy system. What is the best possible way to determine thermodynamic stability at different composition of the solder system ?
The ideal way of studying a new alloy system is an iterative approach of thermodynamic calculations using the Calphad approach and key experiments. For the calculations, you need at least all three binary systems, in your case Al-Zn, Al-Ni and Zn-Ni. This should be no big problem, because these sytems are known from the literature. With this data, calculate the isothermal sections and select the relevant three phase equilbiria that the key experiments. You should then synthesize the samples (e.g. by arc melting or any other melting technique) and analyze them by classical methods: XRD, optical and electronic microscopy... If the data is in agreement with the calculation: fine. If not, then you should perform a new thermodynamic modeling of the system, but this is another story.
Another option for your sytem: look in the "Ternary Alloys" compilation. You can find more information on www.msiport.com
