I did it for Wielkopolska region lately and I summed all the passengers getting on and getting off the train at all railway stations in municipalities during a day (I had good data from all regional and agglomeration trains); taking into account also population we had this way a good indicator of the attractiveness of railway for local communities. If you want to access passenger volume you should in my opinion the average is ok, in general majority of passengers get on and get off at the same railway station in the same day. It depends on what kind of data you have, 24h data or just for couple of hours?

I have a week data (for every day and connection separately). I will determine impact of different factors to daily passenger volume. I will probably choose the sum of passengers get on and get off at railway station. It's more clear and easier to understand and interpretation.

In my opinion, the number of tickets sold to and from the station should be used. This means that officially verified data will be used.

In my view, there is not a unique answer to your question, Wojciek,

The firt question is what you want to do with your data ?

If you want to estimate the "utility" of the station the Piotr's reply seems to me the appropiate answer, but if you would like to estimate de efficiency of various services offered by the station,you would probably prefer some other figures, linked to the service in itself. If you aim at estimating the futur investments, you have to get very detailed data, for example, the number of passengers using the most busy palteform during the peak hours.

What is important, may be more than the accuracy and relevance of the definition chosen, to manage to ensure "comparability"

Over space, what has been done so far in your country. A comparison with UK could be very usefull, if you whant to adress the issue of several trains operators in the same station.

Comparability over time is frequently more than desirable. Some staistics bureaus keep an ancient definition, just to make comparison over time possible. Frequently, the professional or academic litterature rely on an indicator that everybody considered as flawed (for example to estimate the trafic with the sum of train-kilometers and ton-kilometers.

I’ve done a great deal of ped data collection programs over my 40 years of work. In the “old” days of token entries and swipe systems, each turnstile has a dial reader that would move one digit with each pass-thru and could be recorded on site. That effort was easy but required a lot of field staff.

Nowadays, there are tap-entry barrier systems for full access to any and all stations, tap-entry + tap-exit systems for zone-barrier systems, ticket collection on train cars, and others. So pedestrian data collection needs to be tailored to what you have in place.

That aside, others mentioned above collecting data on the platform (by train car and pet-door) if you are seeking to understand specific pedestrian use of platform areas (if you are performing level-of-service analyses of individual areas).

In any case, pedestrian data collection can be labor intensive to gather, sort, and understand If your aim is detailed. Or, it can be a simple task if you are just measuring usage and can gather at a high level based on ticketing.

Finally, sorting on some sort of time and day-of-week basis only complicates the entire effort.

if you are interrested in the number of passengers using a particular railway line, then you should sum all boarding or alighting passengers at all line stations to get the demand of this line.

i would like to offer these remamarks :

1) regarding the "size" of the station, you could use the number of passenges boarding or arriving by train every day as it is made in airports :" enplanment" (depending on what you exactly want to do with this measure, you can choose the ten busiest days or the median, but not the average)

2) If stations serve inter-regional, regional and urban transport, it could be usefull to separate de different kinds of traffic (the passengers do not have the same habits, for exemple : regular commuters might find easiluy their way in the sation).

Apart from the ticket sales trend, it also needs the some ground-works to verify your data, My reason is because, here in South Africa, some people are inside the train from the morning to and from the destination trading whatever required by passengers. And those people have return tickets for a month, also, some like security Officers, they got monthly return tickets but they do not travel on daily basis.

I think you need to identify your point of sampling.

Just count people getting in the train and the direction.

Just count the people alighting and direction.
