I am working on a project about sorghum flour/starch. I want to know what is the best way to dehull sorghum. Is tempering necessary? What is the best tempering condition (time and moisture content) to be used?
My (former) wife worked on sorghum decortication for her doctorate. I have some other articles if you need them. Best I can recall, she did an abrasive decortication & a wet peeling method, described in the attached paper.
If you need more help, I suggest conctacting Dr Curt Weller at the University of Nebraska, Agricultural Engineering Department. You may need a specific methodology for your project needs. The project I just described was mainly to recover cortical wax, and the remaining fractions would be co-processed for dried distillers grains, etc.
I did several trials and results were good. But still have to optimize it. I followed several experiments regarding tempering and roller milling. I still have to maximize the extraction of the meal.
