If I am understanding correctly, you are saying that you have data from a five-point rating scale, and you want to turn those into binary data. Is my understanding correct? I don't use fsQCA so I am likely missing the point.
Yes, you're right the data is in rating scale from and it must be transformed into fuzzy set QCA from for conducting analyses. Without the transformation the anslyes would yield incorrect findings.
If the software requires dichtomizing 5-value variables into 2 value ones, probably other software should be considered.
