Different colleagues use different versions of SPSS software. What is the recommended version to be used in research and why? I found slightly different results when use different versions of SPSS software. I have another concern...is there a method to open SPSS file created by newer versions and vice versa?

The lastest version of SPSS 21.0 is very much suitable for analyzing your data. But, some time its not avaiable in your parent institution. Then, SPSS 16.0 version is very nice to analyze the data.

This is my first time hearing that different ver. of SPSS give different results!! how is it possible? they use same algorithm.
If you find such results it's better to report them to Spss co.
we use Spss 16 or miniTab and always results are OK
I use SPSS version 17 and version 21 in two of systems (Office versus home). But I never experienced different analytical outputs from two versions. Change of versions added my comfort to analyze data, and making stuff more handy with newer version.
I wonder you can report to the SPSS authority with appropriate evidence.
yes, the results differed but very slightly. I do not know why!!! I will report it...
it's long known that different version of spss produce different outputs in some analyses. for example in cluster analyses there is a different starting point in some spss versions so the results can be slightly different. but as i said, that is known for years and i'm sure everybody at spss knows that too.
