We are currently planning to start an ecological experiment in which we try to assess the role of dung beetle communities in the process of dung removal, secondary seed dispersal and seed germination. The experiment will take place throughout different climatological and biogeographical zones in Europe. In order to obtain relevant results, we need to standardize the experiment as much as possible. The only problem we are facing now is the starting date of the experiment. Because of the climatological differences between the regions, starting the experiment on the same date on all sites won't be the best option. I was thinking that the development and activity of dung beetles could be temperature-related, but I can't find relevant literature on this topic. Any advice would be welcome; also literature on this topic from other parts of the world (e.g. North America, Australia) would be of great help.
