How can we accelerate the start-up time of a MBBR reactor for tertiary treatment of a secondary-treated effluent of a conventional activated sludge system? In other words, what is the best strategy for having a fast start-up with low contents of carbon and nutrients?

During my studies in the field of biological wastewater treatment (anaerobic digestion), I found that using granulated sludge taken from perviouse study, adding necessery nutrients and micro-nuterient elements can enhance the start-up periods
I guess the goal of your MBBR is tertiary Nitrification. If this the case the best you can do is seeding with some Nitrifying Activated sludge. This can be done by dosing the sludge to the in-fluent over a period of 48 - 72 hours. At the same time maintaining a high O2 level (i.e 4 - 6 mg/l) and assuring that sufficient NH4-N is also available (Concentration between 10 - 50 mg NH4-N/l is preferable. To avoid Nitrite build-up you most start with applying approx 25% of the final loading and increase this load with approx 10 % per day (25% of final load the first day, 27.5 % the second day 30.3 % the third ...). And the assure that pH remain above 6.5.

For my experimental study las time, I add some preserved microb in the inffluent tank to enhance the biological process in the MBBR Feedwater. Additionally, ensure the COD in the range 100-200 mg/L.
