ModelSim (Mentor Graphics) or try getting student version from Intel's FPGA (Altera website )
It depends, Are you working for a company and is money no object? Some are excellent but so expensive. Others run quickly but are more script. ModelSim from Mentor Graphics seems more user friendly. its easy to compile, simulate and debug.
ActiveHDL also could be a good choice.
Xilinx vivado is the latest tool for coding and it has inbuilt simulator like that of Xilinx ISE. Elsewhere modelsim
It depends on your circuit. If the circuit is simple, such as the one in classroom, the waveform fashion may be easy to use; otherwise, if the circuit is complex, a professional simulator may be proper, such as ModelSim.
