What is the best sequence to write a review article? I need a brief guide with simple and clear language about the basic steps in organizing and writing review papers.
Hussein - do you mean a critical review of already published research - or a book? Or do you mean structuring a literature review i.e. integrative, systematic, scoping? I note that you include action research as one of your keywords - any reason why?
In writting a review article, among the key-aspects of development are the following:
a) To be time specific. Particularly, in topics of highly evolving technologies the inclusion of papers published two decades ago, or earlier, is not supportive.
b) To be focused on a specific problem solving; being a targeted viewpoint upon concise research objective(s), under which the narrative can be developed.
c) To be co-evaluative, since the utilized papers cannot be handled distinctly or in isolation to each other, but under certain aspects of consideration. The most common aspects of consideration are that of: technological appreciation, technological adaptation to industrial processes, cost effectiveness, economies-of-scale achievement/ experimental-, pilot-, or industrial- scales of applicability. Furthermore, common ground on all papers used are the determination of the main limitations and the challenging issues for future development.
d) In writting a review article it is apparently appealing to "unveil" the operational "connectivity" among technologies and their forecasting perspectives, thus, offering novel orientation and positive scientific contribution to the topic addressed.
I'd do it like any other papers, but result based. You can do background of study, in metholodgy compare and contrast methods if any, in conclusion write the one you find better. Base it on advantages and disadvantes and follow that trend. Look at new methods and compare them with what you have too.
1b.- Launch it in different databases (something and adaptation is needed)
2a.- If the search has been launched in different databases it is possible to have repeated references. Try to delete repeated reference. A good approach to this task is to use a reference software like Endnote, Mendeley or similar.
2b.- Filter references reading the title and abstract
2c.- Filter again selected references by full text
3a. Extract data and relevant information of each selected reference
3b. Summarize the information in a table or something similar that allow yo to have a 360 view of the evidence.
