It's actually good to incorporate species richness in FD indices because if an area is highly speciose, but all of those species are doing the same thing, then we can stand to lose a few species and not lose any functionality. Oppositely, if an area has few species, but all of them are doing something different, then we can’t lose any species without sacrificing some functionality :)
