You often hear chimps and humans are 95%, 97%, 99.5%, etc genetically identical, but which is it, and how is it calculated? Is it based on chimeric genomes or unique individuals, and which individuals, is this an African, Asian or European Individual, and for that matter how similar are we?

With some humility I would say that it would not be interesting (to me) to simply tabulate all the DNA base differences between the two species. On the other hand, what would be interesting probably would depend on one's topical and theoretical concerns. The differences one might want to tabulate could depend on whether one was a phylogeneticist, a developmentalist, an adaptationist, etc.
