It depends on what type of compounds are required. For essential oils ( all volatile compounds) crude sample should be used. For other compounds, such as flavonoids, poly phenolic, alkaloids....etc ,you can use dry sample which is free from water.
It is an interesting question. I think the answer depends on what the sample is going to be used for. The method by which the sample is to be dried is also very important. Crude extracts are always a good choice for metabolites susceptible to chemical transformation. We must also consider that if it is to make a determination, the results will seek to be comparable, in which case it is advisable to follow an established protocol.
