I set few experiments with silver nanoparticle and silver nitrate and both the substance has antimicrobial property more or less similar. So my question, why not use silver nitrate directly in spite of going through all the process of making nanoparticle and use it directly?

Silver nitrate is mainly used for the treatment of infected dermatoses, as a topical solution. With nanosilver particles you can modify the size (5-100nm), the shape (nanoplates, nanorods, nanowires,nanoparticles...), the coating (polymer, peptide, sugar...) to influence the antimicrobial activity. Such particles are of interest for internal use, their great specific surface area allow them to reach sub-cellular location for interaction with biological receptors.

1 and 2% silver nitrate solution (not highly concentrated caustic solutions) are approved, used and well tolerated (except for clothes or linen!) for treatment of dermatosis in many countries. The dose makes the poison...
