Soon I will start my Ph.D. and my supervisors recommend that I do my research on GIS for renewable energy systems. As I read about it I found out that most of the research paper topics don't include any electricity dataset nor analysis of the system performance or development for the systems.

So, I would like to know what's the benefit of the GIS field for my major. and if I am accepted to work on GIS as a Ph.D. researcher will it impact my academic field in the future?

PS: during my master's degree, I academically specialized in using machine learning algorithms to classify the quantified solar variability in order to evaluate the degradation performance of two types of PV panel systems.
