Often if we do research, or write a journal article or book, It is always advised to seek references still tend to be new (i.e. published in 2014 to top), then how to reference sources are old publications, is not feasible in reference materials?

The general rule of thumb is that most 'primary' research has a shelf-life of around 5-years. It's just a general rule though and varies widely according to topic, discipline, nature of the manuscript methodology i.e. historical/feminist research etc. Many consider that it is acceptable to include primary citation that is older. That would be based on a few criteria i.e:
1. Has the topic been 'over-saturated' in the past and enjoying a new resurgence?
2. Do you need to compare older cited primary research to newer research to compare and contrast the current context?
3. Are you using 'tried and tested' seminal sources that assist in setting the original context of your current research?

Hi,
It is true that the trend in recent years is to cite new material, but it depends on what you are writing. If you are writing a review article, for example, it is not enough to cite only new publications (2014 and up). Actually in this case you are supposed to address the oldest material possible.
Also, when your paper shows a trend of some kind, you have to refer to old and new studies. There are more examples that show the need for citation of older material..
