I worked during the period 86-88 on self tuning control of a pressure control process.
The self tuning controller provided superior performance compared to PID controller in simulation and in real-time process control.
The main issues studied are the robustness of the parameters estimator, the handling of non-linear process model and oscillation detection to ensure the process safety in the case of large identified model error.
I don't know of many practical applications of self tuning control in the process industry.
Please advise if you know of any practical application case studies.
“Proportional-integral-derivative loops” have been the de facto standard of industrial feedback system working since long time they’re not always easy to use. Self-tuning is a direct digital control technique in which the controller settings are automatically modified to compensate for changes in the characteristics of the controlled process. several self-tuning control (STC) algorithms have been developed and many simulation results have proved their feasibility in the past years, but applications of STC are hardly seen. For PID loops to perform up to their potential, they must first be tuned to fit each application, then periodically re-tuned to maintain the desired closed-loop behavior. Some of the loop are multi control system means the taken feedback from many loop emergency control system can override the normal loop. “Auto-tuning” controllers can help by automatically generating suitable tuning parameters upon request. With the control function disabled, the operator need only press the “tune” button and watch as the controller’s tuning function exercises the process until enough input/output data are available to quantify the process’s natural behavior.
