I am removing carbonates from clay and sand samples. So, I treat the sediments with H2O2. I need to wash the sediments to remove acid residues. I am thinking of heating the sediments with ultra-pure water over hot plate and subsequent evaporation. The process can be repeated for 3-4 times over hot plate. Will it work and act as an alternative method of centrifuge washing?
You can remove acids by putting the treated clay samples and washing with distilled water on the Whatman filter paper 42 on a Buckner funnel and run the funnel by a vacuum pump.
H2O2 does nor destroy carbonates and is not acidic. Would you like to clarify the information to assist responsers
Paul Milham Hydrogen peroxide acts as a weak acid and can react with carbonates as such.
Hydrogen peroxide can be broken down into water and oxygen with heat, so your method should be alright. I would keep the heat low to avoid extraneous chemical reactions.
Dilip Kumar Pal: Thanks for your suggestion. We have filter holder and we use syringes and Nylon 66 membrane filter (47mm diameter, 0.22 micron) for filtering process. Can it filter the acid residue?
Matthew B Paddock : Thanks for your suggestion. I am boiling the sample at 120-140 deg C. So, the liquid can be evaporated quickly. Will it be ok?
