In a pilot study, you can run an experiment to determine which technique (or incentive) is most effective at producing a good response rate to your survey. You can then use the most effective technique in your main study.

A pilot study allows the researcher the opportunity to better 'vet' their interview questions and remove all redundant questions formed in a different format, but relates the same response. You as the researcher could also determine with the pilot, if the interview questions asked, will provide the answers to the RQ.

As the name suggest, a pilot study is conducted before the actual implementation of the study. It helps to evaluate the validity of the questionnaire. Sometimes how the questions are presented may have different meaning to respondents. The pilot study will thus offer an opportunity to revise the questionnaires if any concerns are raised by respondents. Moreover, the pilot study offers an opportunity to experience the practicalities you may encounter during the actual study. Pretesting and pilot testing are invaluable components of survey research, affording

researchers a valuable opportunity for reflection and revision of their project before the costs of errors begin to multiply later on.

pretest is a critical examination of your survey instrument that will help determine if your survey will function

properly as a valid and reliable research tool. It can be expert-driven or respondent-driven.

On the other hand, a pilot study is a trial run of the entire study from start to finish that increases

the likelihood of success for the main study. Pilot studies are conducted to test the entire

research process—usually from a methodological standpoint (e.g., sampling and recruitment strategies, administration, data collection and analysis) in actual field conditions.

Unlike survey pretests, which are usually done on a small scale, pilot studies have

no cognitive interviews or focus groups to determine which measure and concepts are

appropriate in the survey questionnaire. Rather, a pilot test is systematically administered to a diverse cross-section of the sample to ensure that the entire survey schedule
