Tolin S. A. wrote that "PVY has a wide host range among the Solanaceae, including 70 species of Nicotiana and is also found in annual and perennial weeds in 15 or more plant families. " (Tolin, S. A. (2008). Tobacco Viruses. Encyclopedia of Virology, 60–67. doi:10.1016/b978-012374410-4.00575-6).
But, I cannot find the list of these 15 plant families and their reaction to the infection. Is there any species of Prunis among host plants for PVY?
I'm also interested in understanding it because the only statement given is "wide" , 70 members of Nicotiana and 15 Species consisting of cultivated solanaceous species and many solanaceous and nonsolanaceous weeds.
Experimentally-inoculated plants of Erodium cicutarium (redstem filaree), Geranium pusillum (small-flowered crane’s bill), (prickly lettuce), and Lamium purpureum (purple deadnettle) tested positive by ELISA, but they did not display any disease symptoms. The virus has also been detected in other weeds such as Plantago major (plantain), Taraxacum spp. (dandelion), and Sonchus spp. (sow thistle), Fallopia spp. (knotweed), Senecio spp. (common groundsel), Chenopodium album (goosefoot) (R. van der Vlugt, cited after Lacomme, C., Pickup, J., Fox, A., Glais, L., Dupuis, B., Steinger, T., … Hullé, M. Potato virus Y is recorded on Cotula australis, Capsella bursa‐pastoris, and Senecio vulgaris (Fletcher, J. D. "New hosts of Alfalfa mosaic virus, Cucumber mosaic virus, Potato virus Y, Soybean dwarf virus, and Tomato spotted wilt virus in New Zealand." But, I believe that the list of host species can be longer.
If it is so that PVY can infect plants of Polygonaceae, Brassicaceae, Asteraceae, Geraniaceae, Plantaginaceae without symptoms, we must have a vast reservour of infection around potato fields and in private gardens.
PVY (potato virus Y) were detected on the perennial sow thistle (Sonchus arvensis), meadow clover (Trifolium pratense typus L.), wild spin (Chenopodium album L.), dooryard plantain (Plantago major L.), upland cress (Barbarea vulgaris W.T.Aiton), ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L).
