A large number of swarm based evolutionary algorithms have been proposed recently. Whether these algorithms actually bring a significant effect in giving a optimized solution especially in engineering problems like design of weld parameters, design of motors etc. Also I would like to know whether actual commercial companies uses these algorithms for optimizing their design?

You have to choose your area of interest first. Then collect historical data to define simulated the situation to use in industrial application. You can use it in realtime condition if you can capture and analyze data in real time.

Nasa has used GA to design some antennas. In GP many design of electronic circuits have been patented. Look at the Humies. Some new materials have been designed by non-deterministic system, so that bacteria cannot attached to the surface. It is used now in some hospitals in the UK in operating theatre.
So the answer has many shades of gray. It depends on the type of industries. I would not use offline and online non-deterministic method when life is at risk. The actual testing of the design would increase dramatically.
