I been reading some literature about chemosensors, I did not find the excitation spectra for the corresponding emission spectra in many publications. Researchers are using ABSORPTION spectra instead of EXCITATION spectra in fluorescence, what is possible reason?
For a single chromophoric system absorption spectra and excitation spectra are identical. For a new molecule both absorption and excitation spectra should be reported. If both absorption and excitation spectra are proved to be same then only absorption spectra is useful as absorption spectra is a measure of light absorption (absorption coefficient). Additionally, excitation spectra is hard to record (inner filter effect) and prone to instrument sensitivity.
Luminescence may be too weak for excitation spectra registration. Absorption spectra are easier to measure. The equipment is much simpler and less expensive.

Often, the excitation is made on only one fixed wavelength, especially if the fluorescent molecule is well-known (for example Trip at 290 nm). So, on the contrary to the emission spectra, in most cases there is no need to the whole excitation spectrum. I think that the absorption is also often measured to correct for the inner filter effect.
