I have a situation I haven’t had before and I have doubts how to record the behaviour of broilers from the video recordings to get the best possible data.

We had 2 treatments and only one pen of 14 animals per treatment. Animals were not individually marked, so all we can do is to count the number of animals performing certain behaviour. Animals were recorded during the light period of the day, that is for 18 hours (6:00-22:00 and 24:00-2:00) once per week for 5 weeks. We are interesting mostly in leg problems therefore we are going to focus on behaviours that are important from this point of view (long term: resting, standing, feeding, scratching and pecking the litter, moving, short term: drinking, aggression).

So what would be the best way to record the behaviour of broilers in this situation to get good data:

- take all 18 hours of light period and do scans e.g. every 5 minutes for long term behaviours, while short term behaviours should be recorded continuously (a lot of work I know, but if it is worth it…)

- or would it be enough to analyse only e.g. two hours after turning the lights on and e.g. two hours before turning the lights off (perhaps for long term behaviours scans every 2 or 5 minutes, short term continuous OR scan sampling for all behaviours every half an hour with a series of 10 scans in 60 s interval, so in 2 hours we would do altogether 40 scans per pen).

Any other suggestion? I would really be grateful for any suggestion, advice…
