Hi, I have a computational biology backgroud and right now studying how the cells are organized in a tissue. Someone told me that my cells are orientated in specific manner so it has some kind of similarity with liquid crystal because there also mesogen (or molecules) of long axis aligned to the director. In general liquid crystal have the order parameter value in range between 0.3
When scalar order parameter S is negative, it means that molecules are (more likely) orthogonal to the \vec{n} director. As an example, by setting \theta=pi/2, you will get S=-0.5.
In your case, S=-0.3 implies that it is a nematic state. If you place a different \vec{n} in the symmetry axis of the nematic, you will get a positive valued S.

If your liquid crystals molecule is road like and having any carbon with nitrogen atom then we can say the liquid crystal dominate the negative order parameter. The other factor is if your C≡N stretching frequency (by Gaussian 09 software) below 2266 cm-1 , then it is confirm it is having negative order parameter.
In the negative order parameter band gap between the two compounds increased.
