I have not heard of this. Wetlands store carbon as peat or else it is lost by decomposition, which results in the loss of organic matter mostly as carbon dioxide from oxidation of dying plants and through microbial respiration during consumption of litter :-)

Also, I am only aware of the Calvin Cycle in photosynthesis. I could not find the dissertation you refer to :-)

True it is in Russian, but with a strong wish, you can get acquainted with it. I believe, that this is a very interesting mechanism to optimize the process of photosynthesis, and not only in aquatic ecosystems. See:

Dr.Zenon,very interesting work in swamp lake ecosystem.Is the innerloop/cycle responsible for continuous peat formation in the lake?What factors are responsible for the photosynthesis to exceed the respiration in the ecosystem.?I have no experience of working in this line or good exposure to such ecosystems.

I red shortened version of this Dissertation found by URL of Zenon. Nothing new ! Its a pity that colleagues working with production-decomposition processes of the ground are not familiar with investigations of water ecosystems. Sorry, this is like subsystems in lenthic systems or marine, or estuarine. Plankton, benthos, periphyton etc are just subsystems of the larger system of diff pools, and between them exist redistribution when the very high accidentally gross primary production is redistributed into the bottom level and consumed in bottom! Look, eg my papers devoted the Dnieper-Bug Estuary (Liman). The investigations of anaerobic activity of lakes sediments had been started by Russian scientist Romanenko from Borok (Russia). I started such investigations in the Kremenchug reservoir when working on my Dr. of Science dissertation (1984) defense of th. in 1994 (Ph. dr. th in 1983 - but their only role of diff. groups in aerobic processes). As well I used elaborated by Romanenko approach of recalculation of anaerobic processes in bottom sediments. Sometimes aerobic processes were absent completely. By should take into consideration (I just replied one scientist from India) the pH, as over 8,2 CO2 doesn't exist, and should recalculate the balance of HCO3 & CO3. As well it gave me possibility to calculate the aerobic and anaerobic balance of shallows of different types and role of all invertebrates groups in the process of transformation of OM and energy.  My Monograph is in Russian but some Chapters exist in English translation. As well look, please, English version of the paper about the Kremenchuk Reservoir in Hydrobiological Journal (Bedell House).

Should comment as well the term Net primary prtoduction. It has no real background , as even some primary production is consumed by unicell mixed feeders. As well what is the sense of this term. Like - over total decomposition level - of what - subsystem - ecosystem - megaecosystem or... Only the Gross primary production exists really - unicell plankton, benthos etc, higher aq vegetation, terr plants, ground unicell, etc. As well  decomposition - total with aerobic and anaerobic... second way is pref in swamps, peat-lands, shallows of lakes, forest mat etc. - under ice (with snow cower) in the end of Winter...

Can explain about all this one week, but may be enough for this discussion. As well Zenon, you are the very far from Uzhgorod – 240 km. I just returned from Lviv day before yesterday! Can speak with me directly. Working with this about 35 years.

I agree that question isn't so simple. Nobody hesitate in sci quality of investigations of Russian colleagues. But yours question was about new direction in science and it hardly. Financial support of scientific investigations of all post-soviets isn’t enough to start top investigations like attached PDF. New and interesting approaches – yes.

I think that not only gas emission is important (in Global & Political sense may be). If we want to regulate or influenced on the energy transformation processes in natural or semi-natural ecosystems should now about taxonomy and functional activity of organisms that are participating in the process of transformation. Unfortunately this branch in terrestrial ecosystems is developed in comparison with fresh-water or marine more poorly. Some information appears only for microbiota. Macroinvertebrates functional activity not enough, microinvertebrates – help me – exist? Ciliates etc (protists) no.

Anyway should try to start some cooperation in the field. May be can help one other!
