I'll be having gill and liver samples of these fish analyzed for any histopathological findings, but until then... What is going on with these guys? Juvenile Dolly Varden, minnow trapped, in a stream with elevated background levels of a lot of different heavy metals. The general area is known in particular for high levels of zinc, aluminum, lead, and cadmium.

A decent proportion of juvenile dolly varden looked like this, with the remainder appearing visually fine. The clustering of melanophores is a stress response I'm told, and may be exacerbated by stress of being in minnow traps? But those white blobs on the gills and all of the gill opercles being eroded or completing missing is stumping me.
