I've read about it in an article,proposing three failure modes for ground soils : shear failure, pullout failure & FACE FAILURE. I couldn't get the concept because the article was actually about optimization design and not the failure itself.
A face failure is above the toe of the slope. The toe is the bottom of the face. We had alot of slope failures in Oregon. If I find a good reference, I will send.
Here is a fairly recent USGS report on landslides. My work on landslides was many years ago, so terminology may have changed with time as there has been more interest and research applied to this subject. I scanned through this USGS report and it should be helpful as a reference if you have not seen it. Its 40 MB report. I did not check to see if it discusses face failure, but if that is your primary interest, you may want to look further on the internet. Various articles or books may use slightly different terms to qualify their discussion.
