I was once a philosophy teacher, and the education for this, and my developing teaching experience, developed my mindset further and I hope I now have a reasonable critical mind, or at least an ambition to think in a serious, perhaps deep, way.

When I hear new buzz-words becoming increasingly used, I stop using them myself, and I expresss myself otherwise, and ask people what they mean by this new buzz word concept. i often understand that they do not have much of a clue, but they are confident in surfing on a very shallow level In conversation - often with other who also have not much idea, but they form together a kind of pragmatically working conversation. They often seem happy with it, which makes me somewhat depressed.Are they not more curious about how things work?

in my research, I have questioned what people mean by ”distance learning”, ”online learning”, e-learning” and ”blended learning” as example, snd this has been interesting, but also quite depressing. People think they understand one another when they do not, and think they have a conflict, when in reality there is none. And then they make decisions and perform actions...

I remembered this anecdote: A person is asked, Why do you need a head? He replies: I eat into it!

It is clear that a few of us have started thinking deeply, but no one yet has tried to answer the questions of why and how. Therefore, I ask everyone to tell us why we need deep thinking and how can we do it.

Since no one got engaged in trying to define deep thinking and explain the need for it; I wrote and published a short paper dealing with the issue. The paper is now posted on RG under the title: The Fate of Deep Thinking, everyone is invited to look at it and comment on it.

Thank you, dear Isaac; unfortunately, people in power often have no time to think or listen to whoever thinks. The time for people who think is gone, and the time for recycling used persons who cannot even be recycled because change is moving faster than their little brains can absorb.

You are right, Prof. but I still think that we have strategic thinkers amongst today's academics. People do really think, in spite of the lightening speed of change we see these days. Just that those who really think critically seem to be few, but whatever it is, we necessarily have to think in order to come up with innovative ideas to progress in life.

It does not relate to the levels of processing because the issue of deep thinking is not related to LOP, rather, it is related to a new trend where people are thinking and eating and taking decisions on the run, and living in cultural ghettos that alienate them from the public, and cause them to become narrow-minded.

Deep thinking must be a conscius processs that is not influenced by the distraction of what is "out there" It calls upon individually to examine a matter from a point of view that is not influenced by anyting or anyone. It searches inwardly for a response and is best done through self emtying and simple meditation.

Yes, we all need deep thinking. Especially at a time like this when even Science changes daily. One day we find out a particular method is the best only to learn two weeks after, it is the worse. Deep thinking calls for a reponse and allignment with one's true self.

Clearly, for me, deep thinkers are conscious and imaginative people who through diverse diagnosis of issues, are able to come up with profound ideas in solving problems. I must say here that we still have people who continue to invest time, and sit up to think, and come up with innovative approaches and ideas in solving problems.

As said early on, I still believe that we still have people who think, and think critically as well, today, as it used to be case sometime ago. Such deep thinkers maximize, or tap deeply into both halves of their brain. They maximizes the use of both left and brain halves or functions of their minds. Deep thinkers synthesize and analyze issues critically to find answers to them.

No doubt; we do have many critical thinkers and insightful people. However, no one of those thingers is in a position to influence change. In fact, I believe that we have never had a collective global leadership that is so politically and economically corrupt and intellectually and morally bankrupt as the one we have today.

Clearly, Prof. Rabie, you are spot on, and made a solid point. I think, as academicians, we should constantly be reminding the 'so-called' leaders to mend their ways, because, if they don't do so, we all ran into a ditch. This, I think, we shouldn't sit down for such a calamity to happen to us, especially for those of us in the developing or low middle income economies, including my own country, Ghana.

I agree with you, but, unfortunately, we cannot reach the "leaders" and the world press is not interested in what we say because they are chasing money. Our job, as I see it, is to educate the new generation and ensure that it understands the need for reflection and deep thinking and the grave situation of the poor and the dispossessed.

There is more than one way to think. Most people are familiar with the systematic, rule-based thinking that one finds in a mathematical proof or a computer program. But such thinking does not produce breakthroughs in mathematics and science nor is it the kind of thinking that results in significant learning. Deep thinking is a different and more basic way of using the mind. It results in the discontinuous “aha!” experience, which is the essence of creativity. It is at the heart of every paradigm shift or reframing of a problematic situation.

The identification of deep thinking as the default state of the mind has the potential to reframe our current approach to technological change, education, and the nature of mathematics and science. Dear friends; I believe that you all share with me my feeling that the answers are partial and unsatisfactory. Therefore, I wrote a short paper explaining the issue, with emphasis on the drift toward superficiality, and the need to focus on deep thinking. The paper is posted on RG.

For us in the academia, we do a lot of thinking to inform our teaching and learning, and so are others in many other professions. I can only pray for many people to give a deep thought to issues and decisions they make in life.

Writing and publishing is our only way to encourage our people to think before taking serious decisions that affect their lives.

However, you do not seem to differentiate between emotions and thinking. when you feel emotional, you cannot think clearly; and whatever decisions you may take will often be irrational. Deep thinking goes beyond regular thinking to deal with daily matters. when you say that religion prevents us from going beyond certain rules, it actually confiscates your freedom. on the other hand, risk-based thinking is deep thinking because it tries to evaluate the risk of taking certain decisions. the reason for our backwardness lies in our inability to think deeply and our readiness to follow slogans and believe in myths and old ideas that have lost their validity thousands of years ago.

A deep thinking can transform our life. It can profoundly change the way we think, feel and behave. Deep thinking enriches our life and encourages deeper living. Deep thinking means thinking beyond beliefs, preconceptions and prevailing opinions. It means getting rid of false beliefs so that the truth can unfold.

The process of deep thinking can be divided into three parts. The first step in reaching a deeper level of thinking is to eliminate distractions. The second step is to learn to increase your level of concentration so that distracting thoughts can no longer derail our attention. The third and final step is learning to entertain more high quality thoughts.

What is your most cherished belief or idea. Write it down. Then break it down into various subheadings, then break those down, and then more until the ideologies or belief systems are visible and stripped bare. Can you think of any beliefs or ideologies that oppose your original belief or idea, strip them down too. Once you come to a result with many headings, strip each down again. You may find that nothing truly exists that cannot be challenged and each truth only reflects a kind of truth. These kind of truths may by their nature refer to kinds or degrees of falsehoods, but each contains a degree of truth. Now strip down truth.

I think deep thinking is when you can see the real bottom of the question, that nobody else does. Sometimes people miss the true heart of the question, because they only see the obvious, and sometimes the obvious is not the right answer.

For example, this may not be the best example, for millennia men thought that the earth was the center of the universe. Than a clever scholar realized that that wasn't true. The sun is approximately the center of the solar system, earth is not the center of anything.

I still think views so far expressed by colleagues on the platform are all good as far as the true meaning of 'deep thinking' is concerned. The point really is that, so long as problems keeps lurking at our doorsteps, we will endeavour to come up with solutions to them. Hence, to me, 'deep thinking' has everything to do with going down to the root of a problem, or puzzle, and through critical reasoning, or by applying convergent and divergent reasoning approaches, you come up with a solution to the problem.

Many post selfies with a very long thought at the bottom of a photo, upload images with "philosophical phrases" and life advice that often do not make much sense. The study we cited just revealed that they denote low intelligence according to researcher Gordon Penycook from the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo [Canada]. Gordon did a study to find out if there is a relationship between the taste for these phrases and people's intelligence. He called it "On the reception and detection of pseudo-profound bulls". His contempt for such reflections is such that despite being a scientific report, he used the word bulls more than 200 times. He put together several sentences and presented them to approximately 300 people, who had to differentiate between true philosophical phrases, bulls and trivial phrases, and they also had to rate their degree of depth. Almost all the interviewees identified the trivial phrases, but they confused the bulls with quotes from real philosophers.

When he analyzed the answers, he came to the conclusion that those who liked "empty sentences" but elaborate are people who are less reflective and with less cognitive capacity (=verbal and mathematical intelligence), they are also people prone to ontological confusion (=explanations about the reality) and conspiracy ideas. In short, people who are amazed by very flowery phrases do so because they do not understand them. For this reason, before you quote or share a deep thought check to see if and why it means something.

The answer to both questions depends on how we define deep thinking. The definition we finally validate thru a common consensus will surely tell us what deep thinking is meant to be and why we actually need it. But the definition validated can neither be true nor false. Thus, we cannot reasonably search for truth thru what is based on a more or less useful definition in the eyes of a given community.

Nonetheless, truth exists, but does not depend on any community!

Thinking is a mental process of reflecting reality, the highest form of human creation. Creating its new goals, creatively changing their subjective images in mind to discover new drugs, because people plan to achieve them, to determine their importance and meaning for solving real contradictions in life, and the essence of the objective forces of nature , the process of reflecting objects so far on thought and society.
