There are many studies in the field of 3D printing but as far as i am aware there is nothing with relation of Risk Assessment. Currently 3D printing with multiple materials is something you could try. You could try something related to flexible materials and wearables.

You can try to check the anisotropic mechanical properties of the printed models based on different printing direction. Or for multiple material printed models you can check the adhesive properties between each layers.

I'll personally work on something related to risk assessment of 3d printing production lines. I like the idea of multiple materials printing, I'd suggest that my lecturers too if they'll accept that topic.

There is some risk analysis done, particularly on the fumes created during the process, most that I have read is a little vague, which usually means its more dangerous than they want to let on.

I would advise that you look at how to integrate the various areas of rapid prototyping. I dont believe it is that practical to have a single machine for plastic and metal 3d print parts, but a robot taking a 3d print part part through a build, dropping a sheet metal part in place and continuing to 3d print with a similar or different material could be worth investigating. I spoke with Scott Crump (great guy) who invented FDM he thought we could integrate FDM and sheet metal work, but never found time to get it right. Good luck.

If you want to do a research on the Risk of 3D printing process, I suggest you evaluate powder bed metal 3D printing. There are many aspects to consider in terms of safety related to the size of the powders (sub-micron residues), to the sudden oxidation (alluminum and titanium alloy can cause explosions) and dangerous materials for the organism (Nickel, Alluminum, ecc.)
