I submitted an article 21 months ago. The handling editor acknowledged the receipt within two weeks. After nine month, I asked the status of my article and I received reply after three days that the article is still under review process. After eighteen months, I asked the status again but this time I did not receive any reply. Then I sent a gentle reminder after 20 months, but still I did not receive any reply. At this stage, what can/should I do? Obviously many researchers will be facing (or have faced) this situation. Some advice/suggestion in this regard will be gratefully acknowledged.
Dear Akbar,
Send a mail to the editor stating that you have withdrawn the manuscript. Wait for 7 days . If you do not get any reply ,send your manuscript to another journal. However,preserve the mail.

Thank you very much for your suggestion/advice. Is there any other option than the withdrawn of the manuscript? I thought about this option after sending the gentle reminder to the editor but I did not use it yet (because I did not want to wait further 6 months or so). However, now, I have decided that after using all available options in 2 or 3 weeks, I will withdraw my manuscript..

I faced this problem many times (also facing), in this situation I simply leave an email to the editor and submit the article to another journal.
